I remember now that I had a laundry list of plans for tonight. Instead of doing those things, I spent it drawing and watching Ghost in the Shell Arise with my cat.
There was a mighty storm in Michigan last night. The power in my house went out. There is still no power today.
After work, I headed to City Coffeehouse in Allen Park, Michigan. I drew my left hand and then some strangers. The girl drawing talked to me. She is drawing scary faces.
Drawings from City Coffeehouse in Allen Park, Michigan USA. I made these at the “Stalker Drawing” coffee meet that I co-hosted with my friend and fellow artist, Jennifer Rose Evans.
Fine art and nude models / life drawing.
This past Saturday, February 23rd, 2013, I was having a nice dinner with Andy. We were discussing drawing. I was asking him if he would do some nude modeling for me. Then I was discussing which friends and people I know who might model also and maybe I could get multiple people to model in one shot for my drawings.
Suddenly, a blonde girl in her 20’s (a college type of girl) wearing Abercrombie or Victoria secret sweatshirt and pants interrupted at the next table and stuck her head under the divider curtain. “Excuse me?! Did you just say nude modeling?"
Her two blonde girlfriends around the same age were looking over at us. I said, "Yes.”
She was using a tone of disgust as she said, “Don’t you know there are children present and this is sickening that you can talk about that during dinner. That is inappropriate conversation.”
The only children in the restaurant was one baby if you must know.
I addressed her calmly and said that anyone can take their children to the DIA (Detroit Institute of Art) and see nude Northern Renaissance paintings and other artwork without it being vulgar, so how does my talking about having nude models for drawing equal something vulgar as it is fine art.
She then carried on with her girlfriends about how she can’t believe I would say that and it is like porn and the nerve of me comparing an art museum nudes to my own personal artwork. Throughout the whole evening, she sat at the next table complaining to her friends about how vulgar I was being. Never did I mention the words sex, vagina, penis, or anything other than the words “nude models” and “nude modeling.”
As we were leaving the restaurant, the woman decided to express to her friends about how I looked like a freak. I don’t think she was fully satisfied with how I don’t find it inappropriate to discuss art and modeling during dinner, that she needed to try and cut me down.
I did not speak to her further as I didn’t feel it would end well. I enjoy going to this restaurant and do not want ignorant patrons to ruin it for me.
It is interesting how someone can buy clothing based on sexual innuendos in advertising can be so ignorant when it comes to art, discussion of art and not being shamed of what is under everyone’s clothes.
Along with this post are two life drawings that I drew of Andy modeling for me the next morning. It was a morning of studying form, clothing and fabric. My cat watched patiently for me to get up and put food in her bowl.
On 9/29/12 I was an attending artist for Art Audio Angst V in Detroit, Michigan USA. The event was held at the Tangent Gallery (715 East Milwaukee St, Detroit, Michigan 48202).
I had various originals and prints for sale. There were amazing live performances. Here are some scans that I drew secretly of some people in attendance.
On 8/31/12 I was having a bubble tea with my boyfriend Andy at a fine bubble tea establishment in Ann Arbor, Michigan USA.
The bubble tea place was filled with excited college freshmen. There were so many lines of communication going on, it was madness (an no, not Sparta).
I decided to start drawing people in the crowd secretly, but not really secret. Andy was amused that I was looking right across at this girl while drawing here and she didn’t notice me or seem to notice. In fact, no one noticed that I was drawing. Andy even took some photos.
I pinned up my second drawing on the bulletin board of the bubble tea place with my website url and left. Andy went back a few days later and discovered that the drawing was no longer there. I wonder if someone took it and liked it. I can only hope.
On 8/30/12 I attended a job fair at the Dearborn Double Tree hotel in Dearborn, Michigan USA.
The job fair was a big let down. Most of the jobs were for sales or for $10 max pay and would not utilize my experience or any of my degrees. Although, I did ask the security guard table if I would get to carry a weapon. Sadly, they said no.
After wading through the sad professionals in their 40s and up who had come in search of a good career also and seemed displaced by former professions, I sat down at a table and sketched people secretly. I mean, well, it wasn’t much of a secret. I was openly drawing for a half hour, looking right at people. Most people didn’t even notice me. One man noticed me though and he wanted me to draw him, but the chance escaped me as he was leaving to get interviewed for some sales position.
On 9/3/12 I attended Gayz Craze 2012 at Palmer Field in Ann Arbor, Michigan USA.
“Gayz Craze is an annual celebration hosted by the LGBT Issues Commission of Central Student Government, with sponsorship and assistance from our fellow student groups, Bilateral and the RC LGBT*QA Forum. It promotes a welcoming and very inclusive environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning students, as well as allies and students from all identities. Gayz Craze is one of the biggest LGBT and ally events on campus, featuring free food, swag, music, dancing, and entertainment.”
While I was assisting my boyfriend at the BiLateral passing out fliers and such, I snuck in a few drawings of random people in the crowd.
