“Tentacles” is an exploration in tattoo design as minimalist art and tattoo commitment to art.
When I heard about the INK Exhibition AKA Ink Detroit show being curated by Diane Irby and Adam Layne, I was excited for the challenge. I am not a tattoo artist, but a fine artist. However, I did train a tattoo apprentice how to do some fine art techniques in the past, so I decided to accept the challenge.
I created a tattoo design, committed to having it tattooed on my person and then drew up the design big and cropped for the gallery exhibit. I did this all before even knowing if I would be accepted into the show. The risk was a big one. I never thought about what if I had not been accepted, I would just have a very unique tattoo on my arm forever. That was definitely something that I could live with.
The INK Exhibition ran May 10th - 11th, 2013 at Tangent Gallery / Hastings Street Ballroom, 715 East Milwaukee St , Detroit, MI 48202 USA.
The large drawing “Tentacles” sold the first night.
